In an attempt to engineer a work-around on a writer's strike that is playing havoc with the awards season, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced Monday that the festive awards dinner will be replaced by a news conference at 9 p.m. Eastern time next Sunday night to announce the actual winners of the 65th annual Golden Globes awards.

Will the strike ever end. At least The Colbert Report and Daily Show are coming back on air.

They don't have much choice but to dig in their heels. As things transition to digital distribution, if they are cut out of the rights on their material there, they will soon be a bunch of starving artists.

"I do support the writer. they are the creative ones and should get paid for their efforts."

They DO get paid for their "efforts", dipsquat. They get paid quite a bit. In fact, they're often the highest-paid person on a show. The issue isn't about the writers getting paid. The issue is the writers wanting a percentage of DVD rentals and Internet airings. Sounds pretty greedy to me. If I were the studios, I'd tell them AND the unions to get stuffed.

But on the good side it is only supposed to be an hour.

I have to say though, I wouldn't admit to being a writer for an awards show. The stupid banter is always so phoney and retarded. I hope the writers get everything they are asking for, because they definitely deserve it, but guys, please! Put a teeny bit more effort into the banter! These are world-class actors, if you give them a half-way decent line, they should be able to deliver it at least semi-convincingly.

At least we are being spared from another awards show.

Oh, are the writers on strike? I support their efforts but it won't affect me one way or the other. I watch so little tv I haven't noticed any difference!

I don't care, its basketball season and Golden State is back after their best season in over a decade where they made the playoffs and as an 8th seed upset number one Dallas. They are playing run and gun like Phoenix. Or I could listen to actors recite bland jokes with no timing and then hear them go on and on thanking their co workers, the director, the best boy grip, and everyone else I could not care about. Tough decision.

I always get a kick out of people who pay so much attention to actors (i.e. Alec Baldwin, Tim Robbins, etc.) who spew about things that they know nothing about.

These people are paid to regurgitate words that someone else wrote. When the writers disappear, these "experts" have nothing to say.

Agreed, jumpmaster. But be careful about giving the writers too much credit. Most of the writers these days are mediocre hacks at best, and, considering the miniscule amount of talent they exhibit, should be grateful to have the jobs and the payscales that they do, instead of demanding even MORE money.

Let's face it. It's been a loooong time since we've seen a "Casablanca", an "All About Eve" or an "All in the Family". THOSE were writer-driven pieces of art. Today's shows and movies are merely focus-group tested, mass-marketed drivel.

The Globe Awards could have been replaced by a show which showed us paint drying, this would have been more entertaining. And writers? Is it possible that the previous shows had writers? As bad as the shows were you could have gone on w/o them, who'd have noticed any difference?
